On a break...

It’s never too late to declare a holiday break, right?

It’s Christmas Eve eve and we are on a break until after Christmas!

We don’t do much in the way of formal work anyway, but still. We are staying in our pajamas, watching movies, playing games, and coloring for the next few days.

I recently purchased a Wordly Wise workbook for Ava and Handwriting Without Tears for both Ava and Emma. I also purchased Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. Emma and I have a joint New Years resolution: she will learn to read! I know, I know… I said that I would not buy any curriculum! But the girls really like workpages and have been asking for me to print them out. I ran out of ink within a week and decided to buy a couple. But they were fairly cheap! But but but….

And truth be told, Ava has horrid handwriting. I am hoping that a simple cursive will work better for her. And not being a huge fan of computer use for children, and being a little nostalgic about the joy of handwriting, I am not ready to acknowledge the insignifigance of penmanship. Emma is more interested in writing her letters than sounding them out. I thought that it should be the other way around, but not in our house.

But none of that new stuff until Christmas has past. I envision a weekend full of delicious food, ice skating, and perhaps a visit to the movie theater to see The Princess and the Frog. (Followed by a feminist discussion of the problematic nature of Disney Princess culture? Hey, a mama can dream!)

Coming up in our “school year”: finishing our study of slavery, the Underground Railroad, and the Civil War. Dinosaurs. Butterflies and entomology. The Science Fair. Sign Language and Spanish. And more to be determined…
